In conjunction with the San Diego and Tijuana World Design Capital designation of 2024, City Gallery at City College will host an exhibition that honors the long and rich history of Kumeyaay design and innovation on both sides of the border. The exhibition will seek to highlight the design knowledge and perspectives that the Kumeyaay have cultivated over their long history and connection to this region. The goal of the exhibition is to provide a platform for Kumeyaay creativity and ingenuity through the voices and viewpoints of Kumeyaay people.
The exhibition will be on display at City Gallery during the World Design Capital Policy Conference in November 2024. Concurrently, City Gallery will host events, open to all local communities and visitors, that delve deeper into the histories, personal stories, processes and cultural framework behind Kumeyaay design. Events will be designed to provide further context for the exhibition, meaningful community engagement, and facilitate intercultural conversations and sharing. These events will include workshops, talks and panel discussions, interactive installations, Kumeyaay artisan shop and other platforms for Kumeyaay contributors.
City Gallery is located on the City College campus in downtown San Diego, built on unceded Kumeyaay land. In observance of the college’s pledge to sustain a meaningful and respectful relationship with the Kumeyaay people, this exhibition will endeavor to honor the Kumeyaay legacy and provide the Kumeyaay communities of today a platform for their voices and perspectives in their ancestral land.
